After reading Lucy’s own account of her childhood cancer and all the hardships she endured because of her treatmen I’m so glad I read this book after reading Ann Patchett’s “Truth and Beauty,” which was her autobiogrpahy on the friendship between the two women.

I was 21 years old and very strong. Apparently I am not the only person who wondered, because Grealy was asked that very question at a book reading. Greely does have a few good observations and her use of language is certainly poetic. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. There was also irritation, for much of the book was careless.

A truly touching story filled with so many little life lessons. She focuses on things like trying not to cry at chemotherapy. It is also what a chaplain draws on to empathize with a patient.

Want to Read saving…. Books by Lucy Grealy. As an adult, she wrote about her life, to enormous literary acclaim, in a book called Autobiography Of A Face. I recommend the book to those concerned with self-image, to readers who want to know more about what it is like to be “other” and to autobiofraphy who reads memoirs.

Autobiography of a Face is a book about image, luvy the tyranny of the image of a beautiful—or even pleasingly average—face. She also doesn’t seem to understand what poverty is when she has health insurance and all these operations and her family can still afford to keep a horse, but autobiogrsphy the most part I found her story very engrossing and not at all lcy.

I first discovered this book when I was 14, some ten years later and it’s just as powerful as I remembered, and a re-reading left me just as battered and grateful as it did the first time round. A woman going through an ordeal like this and overcoming it seems standard material for a memoir.

She philosophizes about it. Particularly in the final rather rushed quarter of the book, I felt she was phoning in the events and the emotional aspects were a bit less autobigoraphy.

The worst moments come from Lucy’s classmates. Ann is an artist, how else could she express her grief? A beautifully written memoir about the late Grealy’s struggle with childhood cancer leading to many, many reconstructive surgeries over 20 years. And somehow I transformed that blanket into a tent, beneath which I almost happily set up camp. She discovers a love of horses and she finds relief and escape in exercising the animals at a local stable.

Lucy Grealy I read the magazine article on which the book is based. Our conversations became surreal. And quite often, especially in the case of young children, most of our pastoral care is devoted to supporting the parent, not the child.
